Title: Semper Fi with a Zat: Chasing Wraith and Killing Time with the Marines of Atlantis
Rating: G
Character: Ensemble, OCs
Disclaimer: Not mine (except the mistakes, although some of those may have been gleaned from Wiki-P, because I don't know nothing about firearms), no harm meant.
Summary: To mark the 10th anniversary of the declassification of the Stargate program, we bring you extracts from Ed Lawrence's 2014 New York Times bestseller Semper Fi with a Zat: Chasing Wraith and Killing Time with the Marines of Atlantis, originally posted on HuffPo in 2012-3 as 'Despatches from Pegasus', when Lawrence was embedded with the Atlantis expedition. We republish here Lawrence's introduction to the recent anniversary edition.
A/N: ...I wrote the bulk of this in 2009. It was intended as the introduction to a Big Bang story that I'm still trying to write, and which has ended up going in a slightly different direction. The Ed Lawrence who wrote this is not the same Ed Lawrence who I've sent to Atlantis in Despatches from Pegasus, and I'm still working out how much of that is due to what happens, or if it's not quite the same story...
I'm posting this now, because damned if I'm gonna let the tenth anniversary of the show that brought me into fandom pass without posting something.

Good Lord, has it really been ten years? Although I didn't start watching SGA until it was into its fourth year, so for me it hasn't...

Sooo...

*sidles back onto LJ*

I've been, uh, busy?

Although, honestly, it looks like the last time I was here was April 2011, and I swear it's not that long. I haven't been that busy.

I've kind of been sucked into the endless scrolling vortex of tumblr - my excuse is that I've been doing freelance work, which, yay! income generation!, but also energy sucking, so there have been times when all I'm capable of is staring at pretty pictures and clicking 'like'...

I'm also aware that I've periodically been creeping onto LJ and not actually communicating with people, because after a certain amount of time it always seems to get harder. Do feel free to poke me with a stick.

I've been getting back into writing, and have been posted some stuff to my AO3 account. I'm going to dig out my epic SGA declassification story - hopefully I'll get some purchase on it having let it fester mature for a year and a half.

Title: Red Water
Rating: PG-13 for language
Characters: Danny Williams, Steve McGarrett, John Sheppard, Ronon Dex
Disclaimer: Not mine (except the mistakes), no harm meant.
Summary: Tracking a suspect to the surfer's paradise of Waimea Bay sets Five-0's path on a collision course with a face from Steve's path.
A/N: Partly inspired by the line from The Last Man: "Surfing a thirty foot wave in Waimea is cool. Dating a supermodel is cool. This is not cool!" (Waimea means 'Red Water') (Wiki-P tells me so). Also, rather more directly inspired by [livejournal.com profile] pentapus' idle speculation on the nature of a H50/SGA crossover, and the observation that Steve McGarrett "knows [John Sheppard] professionally and really doesn't like him." So naturally I thought: *angst* - actually, I should probably put in a disclaimer here, too - [livejournal.com profile] pentapus is in no way responsible for the following, and I'm so very sorry...
A/N2: Have I mentioned how I'm completely obsessed with Hawaii Five-0 right now? I am. It's so pretty, and slashy, and has the most inappropriately jaunty theme tune...

Title: Shall woman's voice be hushed?
Rating: G
Characters: OCs
Disclaimer: Not mine (except the mistakes), no harm meant.
Summary: Three women who had a hand in exposing the Stargate Program
A/N: For the [livejournal.com profile] stargate_ocs "All You Women Independent" challenge
A/N2: The title, I'll freely admit, I only got after a certain amount of googling, and while it fits the stories in rather uneven ways, it does fit the challenge and the month, as it comes from this speech by the abolitionist and women's rights campaigner Lucy Stone:

"...with anointed lips and a consecration which put even life itself at stake, these peerless women pursued the even tenor of their way, saying to their opponents only: "Woe is me, if I preach not this gospel of freedom for the slave." Over all came the melody of Whittier's 'When woman's heart is breaking / Shall woman's voice be hushed?'

"I think, with never-ending gratitude, that the young women of today do not and can never know at what price their right to free speech and to speak at all in public has been earned."

Title: Newcomers: Captaincy
Rating: PG-13, shading to R, language only, because even girl Marines swear...
Characters: Cadman, OC
Disclaimer: Not mine (except the mistakes, and the newcomers themselves), no harm meant.
Summary: Anna-Maria has been holding herself up by a thread since Ushant and Ordan - and the person who's there to see her fall is not a friend.
A/N: Follows on from the 'Five Callings' sequence. I, ah, may have wound Anna-M a little too tight...
A/N2: For reasons too obscure to go into here, I have Cadman as co-leader of a gate team that's transferred back to Atlantis after several years at Cheyenne Mountain. (Just think of it as - Landry wanted all the people who like blowing shit up that much to be on one team, to save on C-4)

Title: Newcomers: Out with the old
Rating: PG
Characters: John, Team, OCs
Disclaimer: Not mine (except the mistakes), no harm meant.
Summary: New Year in the Pegasus Galaxy for AR-1 and -27, and of course, nothing goes to plan.
A/N: This was meant to be much crackier than it actually turned out. Neurotic!John, who's been plaguing me all year, strikes again.
A/N2: Also, I started writing it last year, so it's set at the turn of 2009/2010. That means it's still AR-27's first year in Atlantis, less than a year since the city returned to Pegasus, and before Janel arrives in Atlantis.

Out with the old )

Anyway - just wishing you a Happy Hogmanay, and the very best luck for the New Year!

Hope you all have a lovely Christmas (or that you've already had a wonderful midwinter festival of your choice, or are saving it for the New Year :)

Title: Out of Mind, pt1
Rating: PG
Characters: Lorne/Cadman, various SGA & SG-1 characters (with other possible pairings)
Disclaimer: Not mine (except the mistakes), no harm meant.
Summary: Laura usually works alone. And at every turn of this job, she's remembering why.
A/N: Written for the [livejournal.com profile] major_explosion AU challenge, for [livejournal.com profile] amathela's prompt: Heist AU. "Be specific but not memorable, be funny but don't make him laugh. He's got to like you then forget you the moment you've left his side." I couldn't resist - I love, love, love that scene in Ocean's 11. It always reminds me of the kind of advice people give you for job interviews.
A/N2: The whole thing's grown into this epic AU 'verse, the details of which I cannot reveal for fear of spoilers, and which has large chunks relating to neither Evan nor Laura, so this is this is the start of their story, but not necessarily the whole story.
A/N3: Notice how I'm trying to make that sound intentional? November was - complicated. Fic helps, but only if I actually have time to write it :/
A/N4: Any similarity between Laura and Leverage's Parker is entirely coincidental. Oh, wait, no it isn't.

Out of Mind )

A/NUmpteen: It's quite possible that this 'verse (but not this story, don't worry - yet) includes a not-as-wheelchair-bound-as-he-lets-on Cam Mitchell who spends his nights fighting crime. Someone stop me, please.

Title: Blood and Blood, Part 1/?
Rating: PG-13 (for gruesome wounds, although not so much in this part)
Characters: Dean Winchester, Sam Winchester, Dr Doug Ross, Nurse Carol Hathaway
Disclaimer: Not mine (except the mistakes), no harm meant.
Summary: Doug knows when there's something off about the kids he treats. When a ten-year-old boy comes in with a bloody scalp and an over-protective older brother, he knows something's wrong. He's right - in all except the details...
A/N: Clooney-era ER, pre-series Supernatural. Oh yeah, that's right, there's Clooney-age. *tilts head*
A/N2: [livejournal.com profile] gelbes_gilatier had no part in this, or so she claims. Not that the bunnies needed much incitement.
Warnings: It's Supernatural/ER. Frankly, you're reading it at your own risk.

Blood and Blood )

Title: Newcomers: No Cost Option
Rating: PG-13 for language
Characters: Lorne, OC
Disclaimer: Not mine (except the mistakes, and the newcomers themselves), no harm meant.
Summary: Lorne has to clarify a few things for Mark Collins
A/N: An incidental Newcomers scene, taking place more or less after Five Callings (which story I should really try to follow up on at some point, but, hey, apparently Lorne's fine :) - part of a group of stories I'm thinking of as "Favours that the Atlantis senior staff are going to regret doing for AR-27"
A/N2: This was incited by [livejournal.com profile] gelbes_gilatier , who ought to know better than to encourage me on Twitter (Why, hello there SPN/ER crossover fic that I'm not writing), and started as crack. But then it developed angst, because, hey, it's Mark...
A/N3: Ignore the title, it's crappy.

No Cost Option )

A/N4: So, hey, hi there! I aten't dead. I've just spent the past three months or so failing to write for the Atlantis Big Bang Challenge, battling evil demons crappy work crapness, bitching about the failure of summer (it rained. All. The. Time.), losing all immunity to developing new fandoms* and generally feeling sorry for myself. I'm gonna throw out a few drabbly things, hopefully, just to get myself back on track. Don't, like, quote me on that. Evil demons may attack at any time.

*No, seriously. Some people react to stress by succumbing to every virus that comes their way. Me, I succumb to shiny, shiny new fandoms. First Sherlock, which I adore, even if I'm a little pissed that somebody found a better role for Benedict Cumberbatch than my Nate. Then Inception, which, dammit, I'm not that keen on, but then I found the kink meme. Then Merlin, because I started clicking automatically on all the delicious.com links that mentioned 'Arthur' without checking which Arthur they meant, so I had to pick up the Merlin DVD, and now I'm pissed that I let myself be put off by the BBC-CGI, because it's adorable (why didn't anyone tell me?). And along the way, I also started watching the Sarah Connor Chronicles, but now I've started season 2, and I'm having some serious cognitive dissonance over the casting of whatshername from Garbage as a Terminator...

So, anyway. How are you all?
scherryzade: (pacific ocean)
Because I've signed myself up for the [livejournal.com profile] atlantisbigbang, and that 40,000 word minimum has rather put my follow up to 'Five Callings' on hold. (The follow up is veering between being 'Five favours John Sheppard (or the senior staff) did for AR-27 that they really don't appreciate' and 'Conversations with the Little Major', neither of which is very pithy ;)

Cut, deleted scene from the Newcomers story, Five Callings: Teyla, Janel & Mark on Ordan
Cut because it slowed the story down, and would have resolved too much of the tension too soon, but I like to think that this happened anyway, if not right then. Also, this scene is the reason Janel's carrying the scissors that play such an important role in Five Callings.

Cut )

My Big Bang story? Features declassification, hapless journalists and other gratuitous OCs, Genii double-crosses, daring rescues on Wraith hive ships, sex pollen and the infamous SGC Kissing Protocol. And that's all before I've worked out the final act.

Also, it has a title! See me with my competent story-planning all of a sudden.

Title: Strange New World (That has such people in't)
Rating: PG
Characters: Sheppard pov, ensemble (implied Jim/John, Jim/everyone...)
Disclaimer: Not mine (except the mistakes, and the crack), no harm meant.
Summary: An altogether different set of newcomers to Atlantis.
A/N: I make no apologies for this (Never give up! Never surrender!)
Warnings: Crack. Technobabble (I finally worked out what to do with Scotty :). But mostly crack.

Strange New World (That has such people in't) )

In other news - go Steven Moffat! I'm convinced :)

Title: Like Father, Like Son
Rating: G
Character: Caldwell
Disclaimer: Not mine (except the mistakes), no harm meant.
Summary: What difference is there between the strange enemies he faces now, and the monsters that his father was obsessed with?
A/N: Inspired by Mitch Pileggi's turn as Samuel Campbell (the father of Mary Winchester) on Supernatural. What if Mary wasn't the only member of that family looking for a normal life?
Warnings: Oh look, exciting adventures in confused tenses! Open endings! Also - SGA meets Supernatural. I'm posting this now, because it's April 1st, and I can always pretend I didn't mean it. Also, crappy unoriginal title...

Like Father, Like Son )
scherryzade: (Default)
Oh, lj, why are you mocking me with your green spring theme account menu? *glares at snow*

Anyway, posting this because I said I would nick it from [livejournal.com profile] gelbes_gilatier  - an opportunity for you to find out more about the, uh, gaping plot holes in some of my stories:
  1. Give me a character and a story and I'll tell you three things about them that didn't make the story (or)
  2. Give me one of my own stories, and a timestamp sometime in the future after the end of the story, or sometime in the past before the story started, and I'll write you at least a hundred words of what happened then, whether it's five minutes before the story started or ten years in the future (or)
  3. Ask me a question about one of my fic . It can be absolutely anything in any fic and I will tell you the honest-to-god answer. Don’t hold back. Ask about major upcoming plot points if you want to. Whatever you ask, I have to answer truthfully.
(Just noticed it's now April, and barely above freezing. The daffs at the bottom of the road look a little shell-shocked ;)

*or possibly, i' faith. Yeah, no, I don't know what that's about either. It's late.

Title: Newcomers: Leader
Rating: PG-13 for language
Character: OCs, Teyla, Sheppard
Disclaimer: The context isn't mine (AR-27 are), no harm meant.
Summary: Bad decisions. Close calls. Unknown enemies. Uncertain friends. Welcome to Pegasus.
A/N: Sequel to Medic, Soldier, Traitor, Coward - the final part of 5. Spectacularly delayed, because I was taking it in completely the wrong direction...

Title: Newcomers: Coward
Rating: PG-13 (For infrequent language and frequent angst - you know I'm just making wild guesses with this, right?)
Character: OCs, Team

Summary: Bad decisions. Close calls. Unknown enemies. Uncertain friends. Welcome to Pegasus.
A/N: So, um, *cof*, following on from last week - what do you mean, it was three weeks ago? - Sequel to Medic, Soldier, Traitor, part 4 of 5.

Title: Newcomers: Traitor
Rating: PG
Character: OCs, Teyla, Sheppard
Disclaimer: The context isn't mine (AR-27 are), no harm meant.
Summary: Bad decisions. Close calls. Unknown enemies. Uncertain friends. Welcome to Pegasus.
A/N: Sequel to Medic & Soldier, part 3 of 5. Because, hey, there aren't enough OCs in this story...

Title: Newcomers: Soldier
Rating: PG
Character: OCs, Lorne, Parrish (Lorne/Parrish, also)
Disclaimer: The context isn't mine (AR-27 are), no harm meant.
Summary: Bad decisions. Close calls. Unknown enemies. Uncertain friends. Welcome to Pegasus.
A/N: Sequel to Medic, part 2 of 5. This took longer than I intended :/

Title: Newcomers: Medic
Rating: PG-13 (some incidental Lorne!whump, moderate language)
Characters: OCs, Lorne, Parrish
Disclaimer: The context isn't mine (the main character is), no harm meant.
Warnings: Made up words and grammar. There's also some fairly blatant Lorne/Parrish subtext, which will probably end up as text ;)
Summary: Bad decisions. Close calls. Unknown enemies. Uncertain friends. Welcome to Pegasus.
A/N: Pretend I wrote the bit after The Stray about Janel adjusting to life on Atlantis, re-learning her skills as a medic and proving her worth to the expedition and herself, while never quite feeling comfortable*... This is what happens next:

I can still say that, right? For at least another week :)

Took the OKCupid (seriously?) Fan Fiction Personality Test (via [livejournal.com profile] gelbes_gilatier ). Apparently I'm The Mindgamer, which strikes me as a very supervillain-ish name. Possibly from a 1930s radio serial narrated by Orson Welles:

"You will never escape the fiendish machinations of - The Mindgamer."

Mwa Ha Ha HA.

Um. *cof*

I am trying to write, but the cold has froze my brain, and I made the mistake of trying to thaw it by reading through old notebooks, so now I'm in frantic bunny-wrangling mode. I'm thinking of setting up a bunny box to keep 'em in.

Anyone want a Torchwood/SGA crossover? 'Five Times Jack Harkness messed with "Don't Ask, Don't Tell".'

...Harkness smiled around the gate room, and John could see little bits of heterosexual USMC resolve shattering as the man turned...

Comes with optional Jack/Jack. Free to a good home.
